Six weeks. You can do this. Probably.
Summer holidays with kids is one of those things that sounds great in theory -- lazy mornings, day trips, quality time -- and then day three arrives and someone has licked the TV remote and someone else is crying because the sky is "too bright."
Here is a practical guide to not losing your mind between now and September.
Get a Loose Routine Going
Kids thrive on structure even when they claim to hate it. A rough framework -- breakfast, one activity, lunch, free time, something outside -- gives the day shape without turning you into a holiday rep. You don't need a schedule. You need a vague plan you can point to when asked "what are we doing today" for the 11th time before 9am.
Book Camps for at Least Part of It
Summer holiday camps exist for a reason and that reason is your sanity. Sports camps, arts camps, drama camps -- London has all of them. Even two or three weeks covered by camps changes the maths significantly. Look at your local leisure centre first -- often cheaper than the branded options and equally good.
Tip: Book now. Central London camps fill up fast and you don't want to be panic-googling "kids activities London August" in late July.
Stock the Boredom Arsenal
A box of random craft supplies, a few new cheap books, and a Lego set held in reserve for genuine emergencies. When things get desperate, produce the Lego. It buys you two hours minimum and they'll think you're a genius.
Get Outside Every Single Day
Even if it's just 20 minutes in the garden or a walk around the block. Outdoor time regulates everyone's mood -- including yours. London has brilliant parks and most of them are free. Check mummy.london's guide to the best family parks in London for inspiration.
Lower Your Standards Where Possible
Screen time limits are for term time. Cereal for dinner happens. The living room will look like a soft play for six weeks. This is fine. You are doing fine. Everyone comes out the other side.
Use the Weekend To-Do Generator
When you genuinely cannot think of one more thing to do, the daddy.london Weekend To-Do Generator builds a personalised family plan based on ages and location. Outsource the decision-making. You've earned it.
