10 Best Playgrounds in London for Dads and Kids
We've done the legwork — or more accurately, we've done the knee-scuffing, sand-in-shoe, pushchair-over-kerb legwork so you don't have to. Here are the ten London playgrounds genuinely worth making the effort for.
1. Diana Memorial Playground, Kensington Gardens
The headline act. An enormous wooden pirate ship is the centrepiece, surrounded by teepees, a sensory trail, beach-style sand, and enough space that you can actually sit down while the kids burn energy. It's free, well maintained, and has decent toilets. Gets busy on weekends — aim for a weekday morning if you can.

2. Coram's Fields, Bloomsbury
A rare gem in Central London: seven acres of parkland and play space that adults can only enter if accompanied by a child. That rule alone keeps it calm. There's a sandpit, paddling pool (summer), zip wire, under-5s area and farm animals. The café is decent.

3. Glamis Adventure Playground, Shadwell
One of London's few genuine adventure playgrounds, where kids actually build things with wood, rope and nails under supervision. Looks chaotic from the outside. Inside it's controlled, brilliant, and unlike anything you'll find in a standard park.
Best for: Ages 6–16 | Area: Shadwell, East London | Cost: Free
4. Highbury Fields, Islington
A proper local park playground with excellent equipment and a well-maintained under-5s section. The café overlooks the play area, which means you can drink coffee and actually see your child at the same time. Underrated.

5. Brockwell Park, Herne Hill
South London's best open space has a large playground, lido (worth the membership), paddling pool and a brilliant little farm. The playground itself is well-equipped, shaded, and has a good under-5s zone next to the main area.

6. Hampstead Heath Adventure Playground
Needs a bit of a walk from the car park but worth it. Classic adventure playground feel with rope bridges, a water play area (summer), and enough challenge for older kids to feel like they're actually doing something.

7. Victoria Park, Hackney
Two playgrounds (one for under-5s, one main), a paddling pool open in summer, and a café that actually does decent coffee. The park itself is one of East London's finest. The playground equipment is relatively new and well maintained.

8. Battersea Park Adventure Playground
Sized for older kids (roughly 6–16) with a more physically challenging setup than most park playgrounds. Supervised sessions run through school holidays. The park itself — with the zoo, boating lake and riverside walk — makes it a full day out.

9. Fryent Country Park, Wembley
Mostly known for its meadows and walks, but the playground here is good — quieter than most, with space to run around without the crowds you get closer to central London. Good for a half-day with a picnic.

10. Ruskin Park, Herne Hill
A south London local secret. Lovely playground, almost never overcrowded, and the park has a good café. If you're in the area and want somewhere calm with decent equipment, this is it.
